How to play l4d No-Steam? - simplified tutorial for newbs

It is recomended that you read ALL the tutorial carefully.

In order for the l4d non-steam client to function well, we will have to follow 4 steps, and respecting the ORDER of these steps will ensure that the game runs smoothly on XP SP2 o.s. I haven't tested it on Vista, but it should be ok. In the case of not respecting the order of the steps, you risk getting errors of the type "you need to start Steam", even if you have Steam running. In this case, delete everything you installed and begin from scratch.

1.The download of the game

The recommended client is full rip skullptura. Unrar it, and make sure that you have at least 5 GB free space. Go to where you unpacked it, and there should be a executable file, called setup.bat. Double click, press any key and wait for the game to install.

2. Patch the game for non-steam multiplayer

- [L4D]_Update_1.0.1.4   run the installer and browse for the folder that contains the left4dead.exe

- [url=http://www.mediafire.com/?5m3yyw2n2zm][L4D] Standalone 1.20 RC3 Fix2[/url]  run the installer and browse for the folder that contains the left4dead.exe. At the end you will choose the ingame nick and language.

- for those of you who have already the client version at 1.0.1.3, you should download and install the following:

- [L4D]Mini-Update 1.0.1.3-1.0.1.4 run the installer and browse for the folder that contains the left4dead.exe

3. How do I enable the console?

Options->Keyboard/Mouse->Allow developer console, click on enable

4. How do I enable the captions? Captions are a very important part of the gameplay especially if you play with no sound as they warn you about what is happening in the game in terms of sounds. So, when the server plays the sound of the horde approaching, in the lower part of the screen the following phrase will appear:
Copy to clipboard
Code:
[Incoming Attack]
so you will be warned long before the horde actually appears.

To enable captions, go to Options->Audio->Captions and select Full Captioning

5. How do I play l4d online?

Login on Garena, click on the "Left 4 Dead" icon and enter one of the chat rooms. In the chat zone there are some buttons. Click on "Settings" button. At the "browse" section, go to the l4d executable, "left4dead.exe", Open then Ok. At the "Botstrap parameters" enter the following line:
Copy to clipboard
Code:
-console -game left4dead +sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
After that, click Ok and "Start Game". Open up the console and write "map" (without the quotes) and tap the space bar. A dropdown menu will apear which contains a list of maps. Choose one and hit Enter or click Send

e.g. :
Copy to clipboard
Code:
map l4d_airport01_greenhouse
The server will run on the co-op mode. If you want to play versus or survival, you have to first write mp_gamemode versus or mp_gamemode survival, then choose the map. The resulting server is a listenserver, a server that depends on your actions. If you choose to leave the game, the server will be shut down and all clients will be kicked.

e.g. :
Copy to clipboard
Code:
mp_gamemode survival; map l4d_sv_lighthouse
Connecting to a server can be made in 2 ways: either from the lobby, which involves selecting a game from the list of friends below in the main menu, or from the console (bring up the console and write connect ip, where ip is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - the ip can be given to you by one of your friends)

Observation - what i noticed is that it interferes with the games played on steam. If you have games bought through steam (e.g. counter-strike), there will be a initialization error when attempting to run them, that is after you played l4d non steam. It is easy and quick to solve, just restart Steam.

Waiting for opinions

Have Fun !

Heya!

I also made a thread about going online. I downloaded a full rip version of Steam L4D. I checked it's version and it is at 1.0.0.5. If, I were to update the game with that [L4D] 1.13 Patch will it patch from 1.0.0.6 to the latest version?

TOP

Nice and simple.

Not sure why there are two update files though. And any bootstrap parameters are NOT NEEDED!! If you want to make it even simpler, get rid of that.

For anyone interested, I have this whole process documented via a video tutorial in my stickied thread: http://fps.garena.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=600237

TOP

So I can update it from version 1.0.0.5 to 1.0.1.3??

TOP

Wait, how come when I try to join games, I will be booted out to my desktop and it tells me that I am missing a  map

TOP

that s probably because the server has currently loaded a custom map and has cl_allowupload set to 0

TOP

pls update post cos new version is out=)
